What to Do While You Wait
A few quick steps can save a lot of damage. Only do what is safe.
Turn off the water at the meter. Most Brisbane houses have the meter near the front boundary, often in a small box at ground level. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. Units often have one in a service cupboard.
Use the closest isolation valve if there is one. Toilets and sinks usually have a small tap on the supply line, so you can stop one fixture and keep the rest running.
Leaking hot water system? Switch it off at the switchboard (or turn the gas off at the unit), then close the cold water valve to the tank.
Blocked drain or toilet? Stop flushing and stop running taps, showers and the washing machine, so waste water has nowhere to back up.
Keep power and water apart. If water is near power points, switch off at the switchboard only if it’s safe and dry.
