Signs It’s Time to Call a Plumber
Small warning signs often come before a blocked drain overflows:
Water draining slowly from the sink, shower or bath
A gurgle from the toilet when the basin drains
A toilet that needs two flushes or blocks regularly
Sewer smells in the bathroom, laundry or yard
Downpipes spilling over, or water pooling after rain
If more than one fixture is affected, the blockage is likely in the main line.
A suburb of houses. In the 2021 Census, about 91% of occupied dwellings in Wavell Heights were separate houses. Each house usually has its own private sewer line running under the yard to the connection point, and roots from garden trees and shrubs are a common cause of blockages in lines like these.
Homes from the 1920s to the post-war years. The area was subdivided for housing from the mid-1920s, and War Service and Housing Commission homes followed after World War II. Drains that have been in the ground for many decades can have cracked or shifted joints where waste catches. A CCTV inspection shows the condition of the pipe.
Between two creeks. Wavell Heights runs from Downfall Creek in the north to Kedron Brook in the south. Low-lying yards near either creek can be slow to drain in a storm, and a stormwater pit that is already part-full of leaves or silt overflows first.

Why does my drain keep blocking in the same spot?
A drain that blocks again soon after clearing usually has an underlying cause, such as roots growing through a joint, a sagging section where waste settles, or a cracked pipe. A camera inspection finds it, and we price any repair before starting.
Can you clear a stormwater drain that overflows in heavy rain?
Yes. We clear blocked downpipes, pits and underground stormwater pipes, and use high-pressure jetting to shift silt and roots. Stormwater must not be connected to the sewer, so if we find a connection like that, we’ll tell you.
Is the sewer pipe under my yard my responsibility?
Generally, yes. Property owners are responsible for private sewer pipes up to the point where they connect to Urban Utilities’ sewer. If the blockage turns out to be in their network, report it to Urban Utilities on 13 23 64.
