How to Tell Your Drain Is Blocked
Common signs include:
The kitchen sink filling up when the dishwasher drains
Toilet water rising high, then emptying slowly
Gurgling from drains after you run water
Musty or sewer smells in the bathroom or laundry
Puddles around a stormwater pit or downpipe after rain
A smell or gurgle on its own is worth checking before it turns into an overflow.
Interwar homes. Bulimba was a mature suburb by the end of the interwar years and is known for traditional Queenslander homes. Underground drains in homes of that age can have cracked or misaligned joints, where roots and debris collect.
Townhouses and units. In the early 2000s, townhouse developments replaced former industrial sites, and in the 2021 Census more than half of occupied dwellings were townhouses, flats or apartments. What to Do Until We Arrive
Don’t run the dishwasher, washing machine or shower into a drain that’s backing up.
Put the toilet lid down and stop flushing if the bowl is high.
Leave chemical cleaners on the shelf. They can make the job hazardous.
Find the overflow relief gully outside and make sure nothing is covering it.
